Dashain, the biggest and longest festival in Nepal, holds a special place in the hearts of Nepali people. Celebrated for 15 days, it is a time when families unite, traditions are cherished, and the entire country is filled with a spirit of joy and festivity. From flying kites to receiving tika and blessings from elders, Dashain is a festival that beautifully showcases Nepal’s rich cultural heritage.

Tihar is a festival of light and love, emphasizing the importance of animals, family ties, and divine blessings. It is celebrated to honor Yama (the god of death), Goddess Lakshmi (the goddess of wealth and prosperity), and to express gratitude toward animals that are integral to human lives. Unlike Dashain, which focuses on victory over evil, Tihar highlights unity, prosperity, and the harmony between humans, animals, and gods.

Teej, short for Hartalika Teej, is the fasting festival of women in Nepal. It usually takes place in Nepali Bhadra month (August to September in Solar Calendar) and lasts for three days. Teej Puja is particularly held at Pashupatinath to commemorate the reunion of Goddess Parvati and Lord Shiva. During Teej Festival, Nepalese women will dress in their beautiful red saris, fast to honor Lord Shiva and pray for a happy marriage.

Sonam Lhochhar, also spelled as Sonam Lhosar is the most significant and extravagant festival of this culturally rich community, which marks the beginning of the Tibetan New Year and is celebrated with great fanfare and zeal every time; men & women adorned in their colourful and traditional attires, masked men dancing to the rhythmic beats of damphu (a traditional small round drum) and elaborate spreads of exotic Tamang cuisine is something which is always looked forward to by the visitors and travellers planning their trip to Sikkim during the festival.
